This is your choice based on what you want to get from counselling, how effective the counselling is for your relationship, and what your budget allows.
Some couples get back on track after just two or three sessions. Other couples need at least six sessions to resolve deeper issues. Sometimes couples attend a session monthly or ‘now and then’ as a healthy relationship check-in.
Unlike many counsellors and psychologists, I do not believe in ‘contracting’ clients for a specified number of sessions up front, so you are never ‘locked in’. You decide your level of participation based on the factors listed above. I work flexibly and ensure your needs and preferences drive the process as we go along.

For most couples I usually recommend a fortnight between sessions. This allows enough time to reflect on the past session, apply new strategies in your relationship, and let new insights ‘percolate’ in your mind before coming back.
The exception to this is couples in crisis. If you are not able to communicate effectively at home, it is recommended you attend weekly sessions for a few weeks to start. This enables constructive dialogue to plan a way forward.
Couples in a good place in their relationship like to come monthly or just ‘now and then’ for a relationship check-in.

Absolutely 100%. I welcome all couples seeking support.
-
For effective couples counselling, both partners need to be engaged in the process and committed to change.
However, if you wish to talk through your relationship concerns as an individual, you are welcome to book an individual appointment to do this.

If you are experiencing violence in your relationship, you require specialised family and domestic violence support. Good options are:
1800 Respect: to be referred to services call 1800 737 732
Safe Steps: 24/7 family violence response centre 1800 015 188
The Orange Door: Sunbury office number 1800 271 151
Cobaw Community Health: offices in Kyneton, Romsey and Sunbury
Regular couples counselling does not translate to violent situations as in these cases the focus needs to be on safety and accessing appropriate services such as alternative accommodation. Regular couples counselling can be helpful when there is no longer an active threat of violence.
